Bangladesh and UNDP :
Nurturing new ideas and local solution to end poverty

Human Development in Bangladesh
Human development goes beyond improving incomes. It is about improving the quality of people’s lives when it comes to basic human rights such as education or health, and thereby enabling them to lead fulfilling and productive lives. UNDP supports Bangladesh in its efforts to find solutions to the challenges human development present by working with people from all branches of society to tackle major constraints in the following crucial areas:

HIV/AIDS: Has the potential to undo decades of development in Bangladesh. UNDP joins others at the frontline to combat this devastating disease by promoting a multi-sectoral approach aimed at ensuring that the prevalence of HIV/AIDS remains low. Also through mass media campaigns targeted to vulnerable groups and by establishing a national network of safe blood transfusion units.

Livelihoods: Unemployment and underemployment maintain the cycle of poverty in Bangladesh. UNDP is supporting women entrepreneurs to break out by helping them develop their products and access markets as well as ensuring safe employment in new upcoming sectors.

Empowerment of Women: Incorporating women’s concerns into policy is a new idea that is gaining momentum among decision makers in Bangladesh as a result of technical assistance to the Government as part of its strategy which is aimed at mainstreaming gender.

Protection of Vulnerable Groups: Street children and commercial sex workers are among the most vulnerable in Bangladesh. UNDP supports them through a comprehensive programme which provides drop-in centres for kids, counseling, access to health services as well as training opportunities for sex workers.

Information Technology for Development: Information and communication technology (ICT) has become an indispensable tool in the fight against poverty. ICT provides developing nations with an unprecedented opportunity to meet vital development goals such as basic healthcare and education far more effectively than before. UNDP is exploring options with the Government of Bangladesh for ensuring that the nation can take full advantage of IT for development.
