About  GRAMAUS

Background

Grameen Manobic Unnayan Sangstha (GRAMAUS) i a non profit voluntary organization established in the year of 1984 by the initiative of some young social workers and NGO personnel with an idea to initiate a kind of social work which will not only help people ternary but also make them (the rural poor) capable of undertaking the responsibility of their development.

With an aim to alleviate poverty and to make the unalterable group specially landless, marginal  and small farmers families self-reliance through group formation, training, income generation activities, non-formal education, utilization of local resources, development of women and undertaking needs and problem solving programs by importing skill, knowledge and technique. It believes in bottom up, non-directed, integrated and participatory development framework and acts as a catalyst with its target people.

The organization has endeavored to be an effective instrument of development of the poor since its establishment. It has been consistently making efforts to evolve an alternative development strategy. Over the Years, the organization has succeeded in developing strategies, approaches and programs and relevant to the key referred of its alternative development paradigm, referred to as participatory sustainable development paradigm. It has pioneered the concepts and method of organization building participatory approach and planning process, access to and common property resources, like Social forestation, education program and many innovative employment and income Generating activities through credit management.

Over the Years the objectives and goals of the organization have expanded. The organization seeks to promote health and socio-economic condition of women and tribal people by undertaking different development program. The organization dreams and  strives for a society which will be free from exploitation and oppression, and where every individual will be able to live in peace and get an equitable share of the available resources. It has experienced and skilled staff who are quite capable to carryout all kinds of development activities.

Considering practical implementation of MDGs at local level  the activities and achievements so far made are remarkable and praise worthy in the operational areas and able to built-up a good relationship with local administrations and government's different departments which has been highly appreciated and accepted by the local people also.

Goal of the Organization:

The goal of the GRAMAUS is to improve the social status of the rural poor people by enhancing their accessibility to education, health, etc. and raising their daily income and social empowerment to ensure human rights of the poor stratum.

Objectives of the organization:

  • To help the poor rural people to build-up organizational structure necessary for undertaking collective and united efforts to eradicate poverty and economic backwardness.
     
  • To enable the landless and marginal farmer families to increase their income and improve their nutritional status through homestead gardening, poultry, fish culture, small enterprise agro - processing and other income generating activities.
     
  • To enable the small farmers intensify and diversify crops production and pursue other rural enterprises.
     
  • To foster savings attitude to develop their capital for income generation and meeting their emergency needs.
     
  • To help the poverty stricken people to identify and analyze their present situation and can take appropriate action collectively to solves those problems.
     
  • To help the target people so that they can plan, manage & evaluate their organizational patterns.
     
  • To provide credit support for developing own capital for running income generation activities and encourage them to generate more savings fund.
     
  • To support and impart methodological training to target groups in order to enable them to carry out effectively the plans and programs of the organization.
     
  • To provide adult and child education to the beneficiaries for making them literate.
     
  • To provide health, sanitation and environmental education to the beneficiaries.
     
  • To encourage the beneficiaries tapping local resources with a view to become self reliant.
     
  • To encourage the beneficiaries to build up their village, Union, and Thana level institutions through which they can run their activities independently.

Registration :

The GRAMAUS starts functioning as a voluntary organisation in 1984. With passage of time and involving with the rural people through program implementation the organization feels for its registration and through formal procedure registration had been taken from the Department of Social Welfare in 1985. With the efforts of its Executive Director and associates the organization became healthy in respect of project implementation and found flow. In the decade of nineties the organization started to handle donor (foreign) assisted projects which increased its activities and established GRAMAUS as a reputed NGO. The organization got formal approval from NGO bureau in 1993.

Membership / Partnership with other Organization :

GRAMAUS believes on Partnership development and collaborative efforts to uplift the social activities in the sectors of education, health and other social and community development aspects. Development of partnership  and collaboration among organisations working in the same field is more essential for utilizing the assistance provided by the donors. GRAMAUS started membership/Partnership development initiative to implement integrated project in the Mymensingh region since 1988.

To facilitate the implementation of rural development project it has become member of  ADAB in 1988 and  jointly working with as many as eight different organizations in different aspects and development issues. The major partnership issues are rural credit, integrated rice fish culture, women development, sanitation, non-formal education, forest and fisheries development etc. The detail information of the Members and partnership of the GRAMAUS are illustrated in the following table.

Staff :

The total staff strength of GRAMAUS is 115 of which 88 male and 27 female. The proportion is 76% male and 24% female. Out of total present manpower of the organization only 14% is engaged in administrative and support services. Presently 88 Personnel are involved in different project of the organization, it has 85% experienced staff, working more that 7-10 years in the organization.

The staff working in the projects have received different development training courses mostly organized by the donor Projects or organizations.  The present manpower strength is given in the following table.
